Musical Memories // David Bowie

Seeing as how it's David Bowie's birthday today*, this post will be all about him. Well, not exactly about him but more about me loving him. Did you know he was my first crush? Him and Clark Gable are the two men I remember as my first celebrity loves but mostly Bowie because not only was he cute but he also was a musician. Some of my earliest memories revolve around music and I have several involving David Bowie's music.

One, I remember very well. I was probably four or five and my dad had picked my sister and I up for the weekend and I was singing Suffragette City in the car. I sang out "wham bam thank you ma'am" and my dad got mad. Obviously he felt those lyrics were completely inappropriate for a child to be singing and obviously they were just words to me. I chuckle every time I hear the song!

A couple years later an incredible duet had just come out and I got the 45 for the game of musical chairs that I planned on playing at my birthday party. The song was none other than Dancing In The Street and my other love, Mick Jagger, sang and danced by David's side. The video was my favorite at the time and if you've not seen it, I highly encourage you to watch it. It very well could be one of the worst videos ever made and their rendition of the song leaves you wondering whose idea it was and why they ever let it happen! haha! Anyway, we played it at my party and I was stoked :)

Needless to say, when Labyrinth came out I was thrilled and jealous that Jennifer Connelly got to kiss him. When Ruben and I started dating we usually just listened to music and he had David Bowie's first album. It's a folk album (we still have it) and while everyone probably knows about it now, back then before the internet it was harder to know about such gems. Anyway, he got big points in my book for owning that record and you really need to listen to it if you never have. "Ha ha ha, he he he. I'm a laughing gnome and you can't catch me."

Do you have a favorite Bowie album, song, video? Please share! I don't have a favorite song (that would be way to hard to pick) but my favorite album is Ziggy Stardust and I love the video for Life On Mars. Happy Saturday! I hope you do something fun!

*I wrote this yesterday.

  1. Queen bitch is my all time favorite bowie song. His rendition of Andy Warhol in the movie Basquiat is truly amazing. I'm so sad today.

  2. I was just saying this morning that I believe he was my first crush as well. There was a song on an album I had as a girl about glass spiders... I'm not sure of the name anymore, but it was a favorite that I've never been able to *re-find*

  3. Wow, you know what is so strange? On Saturday, I spent a full hour talking about and showing pictures of and listening to songs by David Bowie with my kids -- my youngest was fully rocking out to Changes. We obviously had no idea that he would die just hours after his 69th birthday; I had no idea it was even his birthday. The universe works in mysterious ways. Thanks for this post, Anne. What an amazing artist he was!

  4. Oh, and I meant to say that I was swooning right along with you watching Labyrinth (one of my all-time favorite movies growing up)! He was one of my first crushes too!

  5. Wow! I can't believe you wrote this in honor of his birthday and it ended up honoring his death as well. I love your musical memories, and how musically inclined you have been ever since early childhood. Have you noticed that trait in any of your own children? I love David Bowie every time I hear him but have never actively pursued his music. Sad to say I'll probably be doing that now. What a great influence and artist we were so lucky to have in this world.

  6. Funny that for years I couldn't seem to find the song, but was moved after mentioning it here to go and search. Lo and behold it is called "Glass Spider," (on the album Never Let Me Down, which is one of the first cassette tapes I ever owned,) and is just as hauntingly wonderful as I remembered. :)

  7. Wow, this is was so timely. I've listened to Bowie intermittently, not like a superfan, but as an admirer of his wild sensibilities, his lyrical gift. Finding out about his death, has been a reminder to remember to appreciate the visionaries, the magic makers in music. Listened a ton of his music last night, as well as Bjork, Kate Bush, The Pixies, artists who were influence by him, or benefited from his oddball, outside the box sensibilities. It's hard to believe he was only 69. His influence was so enormous. <3
