The Hawaiian Dress
I remember when I first wore this sweet little Hawaiian dress. I was so excited by the fact that it was long and old. It made me feel very grown up. I was talking to Mom the other day trying to figure out who the dress originally belonged to. She said it was my Nana's but I asked her and she said it wasn't. I showed Nana a picture of it and she said when she was pregnant with my uncle that her mom had sent two Hawaiian dresses, one for her and one for my mom, but she was pretty sure that it looked different. We went upstairs to her room to look through pictures. I had originally wanted a picture of all the girls in my family who'd worn it (me, Alex, Marianne and my mom) but I was unable to find one of my mom in it. We did find a picture of my mom in a different Hawaiian dress but not this one. Now it's a bit of a mystery as to where the dress came from. I can tell by the tag that it's pretty old. So, while I only have a picture of me and Marianne in it, I thought I'd share it anyway. If I do come across photos of anyone else wearing the dress I'll make sure to update.
I think this is the only piece of clothing I have from when I was a girl. I'm happy it happens to be a dress I loved.
Do you have any of your clothes from childhood? Any special pieces you've been able to hand down to your children?

What a perfect little dress, and you and Marianne are both adorable! I love this story too. I hope you can find a picture of your mom in it too, how awesome would that be?! I have a lot of sweet clothes from my own childhood, some that are extremely memorable to me. I will have to do similar posts as they fit Lucy more and more. She has already worn a lot of my own baby dresses, and Polly too. Things both Addie and I wore. But I don't know that there are any that also went back as far as my own mom. Darin's mom did give me some floaty little antique dresses that she wore as a baby, and both girls have worn those. I love love love old baby and children's clothes. The details are always incredible.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see you do this Heather <3
DeleteOh, that's a lovely story! I hope you somehow find another photo for your visual timeline... A couple of months ago I discovered my mum had some things from when I was little. On the same day she gave me a skirt my granny had originally made (in the 40s I think?) and which she (my mum) had altered to wear (in the 70s). It's a bit holey, and needs a new hem but I put a new zip in. I really like the idea that, when I eventually get the hem right and can wear it, all three generations of us will have worn it (and I think my granny would like that too).

Yes! My mother is a memory hoarder and kept a good bunch of clothes that she or my nana had made us when we were little. I managed to pop Mia in a few of them before she grew too big. Nice memories huh, and the quality is amazing. Either that or the washing process was way more gentle back then. Marianne looks like a little flower among those cacti.

ReplyDeleteMy mom is still saving all my clothes from childhood in case I one day have a girl (though I know I will only ever mother boys...). My dad just passed down his old cub scout uniform from when he was a kid... Can't wait for it to fit Hooper, it's so cute. This dress on Marianne is to die for. She's such a cutie.
ReplyDeleteOh man! This is adorable! I had so many cool vintage clothes when I was little, including a turn-of-the-century sailor dress that was my fave. I also have a red, contra-dance-y, dress that I wore as a kid, but that still fits me. It's pretty cute. I have a few of my things from childhood and infant hood, but a lot of them have gotten lost in the shuffle. Thanks for sharing this, what a great topic <3

ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet dress and you both look adorable in it! Oh man, I wish I still had some things from when I was a kid. Clover has plenty of cute vintage items in her wardrobe but unfortunately none of them were mine. Being the youngest of the cousins on Lucas' side she does have some things that have been handed down from when her now 21 year old cousin was little and were worn by 3 other cousins before her, so that's kind of cool. I'm definitely saving some of her things and I know one day she'll totally appreciate having them :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful and special dress to have. I have two boys and my mom didn't save most of the clothes I had as a child. But I do have a knitted sweater, a vest, and a crochet jumper that were all fairly neutral colors that she saved (since she made them) and I've put my boys in them. Nothing though that lasted 3 generations! That's pretty sweet.
