musical memories // pearl jam 1993

IMG_7894
this is a sad memory for me. you may already be able to guess where this is going by the ticket stub or rather, ticket with stub still attached. the year was 1993 and i was a freshman in high school. pearl jam was THE band. i was in love with eddie vedder, had pictures of him all over my wall. so this concert was going to be the highlight of my year. turns out that it was my dad's weekend for us to come over and he told me i could not go. no amount of crying, pleading or begging would change his mind. being the obedient daughter that was/am i did not go. and guess what, almost 20 years later i am still very sad i missed this one.

two of my favorites shared the stage for the MTV music awards that year. i remember watching this and just loving seeing them together! ok, i'm really getting depressed now writing about this :( and what's more depressing is that i never have seen pearl jam live. but on a more cheerful note, i AM seeing neil young in october at the hollywood bowl. now that's something to be happy about! plus, i still could see pearl jam or eddie vedder solo. it's not like it's too late. yes, i'm feeling a little better now :D

above is pretty much what i looked like at the time, although this picture is from the beginning of sophomore year 1994. rita (on my left) got to go to the concert. yep, i'm still jealous rita! that's vanessa on my right. i wasn't friends with her yet in 93 but she opened up a whole new world of music to me when we started hanging out. come to think of it, these two ladies are my two oldest friends! and this may very well be the only picture i have of us all together. i'm proud to say that they are both still in my life. yay for friends!

i have actually kept almost all my ticket stubs and wrote down on the backs all the bands that were at each show. there was a period in my 20's where i stopped but i am back to collecting them again! aren't you just SO curious to peek inside the pages of my little book and see all the concerts i've been to?! well, you'll have to wait! i think my little book deserves a post of her own :D

  1. I saw Pearl Jam in 1995 in Sacramento. Hope that doesn't make you too jealous ;) I went with a boy and we were just friends but it was a "date" so it was kinda awkward for me and also, I lost my sandal in the mosh pit and was one-shoed the rest of the night! I remember it being crazy and fun. Joey and Em just saw Neil Young in Tahoe...they were worried he'd jam too much but they ended up LOVING it. I love these posts you do and cannot wait for more peeks into your little book. also, how can you be so organized!? i have kept all my ticket stubs too but lord knows where in this crazy jumble they've ended up. someday...someday...i'll put it all together and organize everything..the attic, the garage, the closets. but for now, there are tiny pieces and memories every which way.

you were SO CUTE for the 90s. it was a bad time for me, particularly 93!!!

  2. Wow that is amazing that you kept all the tickets stubs....I lost mine :( I was a big Grateful Dead fan and 91 and 92 I was touring...I have seen Neil Young he is great you will love it! ~ I have been trying to find some pictures of myself from highschool recently but we have moved so much I think things have gotten lost along the way. That is so sweet that you still have your friends, childhood friends are something special to treasure indeed!! Cute picture of you in the 90's ~Love Heather

    2. Your memory for things like this is impressive, I was a little too much in the haze those years--of which gives me some regrets. I don't know how to tag your friend Heather... Dead shows...first fell in love with Jerry at a Garcia Band show, horrible I don't even know where I was @!..but it was definitely OC or LA in the Fall of 93. Then December 15 (I remember cause it was my bday) I saw them in LA (again don't know where I was!) 94'-and the 17th I believe of the same. Seattle Spring 95 and Vegas 95. Phish Seattle 95. So, my dream to follow the Dead ended with Jerry's death...Maybe Heather was there:) at some of these:)

  3. anne, i am sorry that you missed that concert, but, maybe you will get to go to another one... i like neil young and eddie, too. i like the slowerpaced, more folksy styles that they have,on some of their songs.... LOL...:):)

  4. This post kind of makes me depressed, but for totally different reasons obviously ;)
. I can't believe you and Heather and anyone who hasn't moved around most of their 20s still has all these awesome/depressng ;) mementos of their teenage years. I have NOTHING. The zines I made, my few photos (photos were expensive, right?), collections and trinkets. All purged. Screw minimalism, I would love to have that stuff. I can't wait to see more of your memories. Thank you for sharing!

  6. But more about the Pearl Jam show...it was pretty amazing (sorry;) but it was) however, it would have probably been better were you there!..one reason being because my friends were being way too passive for my tastes= we were standing in the far back because it would have taken a LOT of energy to maneuver our ways up to the front (which I think you and I would have exerted happily)--so I spent my night disappointed at being out of all the action and listening from afar.
Also, you didn't share something I know about you which your readers may not. You didn't go to the concert because 1st of all-your great respect and love of your Father, you would never cross him. I remember thinking at the time that you were crazy for not just figuring out some scheme to get yourself out of going to your Dads. I myself, must have lied to my parents about my whereabouts...there's no way they would have let me go.

  7. I didn't know you ever liked Pearl Jam! Five was the first cd I ever owned. I LOVED Eddie Vedder too. He was/is so gorgeous. I wonder if now, looking back, your dad would have a different point of view. Wonder if he regrets not letting you go. Just curious...

Cute post. Love your ticket book :)

  9. I saw Pearl Jam play live for the first time this July at Werchter Festival in Brussels. An awesome experience. Eddie Vedder's voice is beautiful, don't you think?

  10. oh poor blossom! I feel for you! I went to see Pearl Jam in 94 in Australia, and have never forgotten it. I went with my boyfriend and his friends, and I wore denim cut offs, a white crop top and a blue checked flannel shirt tied around my waist. And my hair was crazy big. Eddie Vedder. Whoah mama. And you totally CAN go now. you must. xo

  11. Anne, I can totally imagine how devastating that must have been for you at that age, oh man, the worst! Well, they may no longer be in their heyday, but at least it's not too late to still see Pearl Jam live. Heck, if you can make it up north for one of Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit Concerts, you could even see Eddie Vedder play with Neil Young (he's a reoccurring performer, sometimes with Pearl Jam, sometimes solo). I did, back in 2004, I think it was, and Sonic Youth played that year too which I was SO STOKED about, speaking of 90's music loves. It was an amazing concert all around.

And completely off topic, remember that Hawaiian hipster trend you were predicting some months back?...

  12. My other half and pearl jam go way back... Even now he will still put on an old old PJ album to clean the house or if we've had a fight. Never anything else, go figure! We saw Neil young about 2 years ago now, he was a-ma-zing. I don't mind the jamming, he certainly can jam for an old bloke! One of the best, we saw bob Dylan the same year so I'm really lucky we got to see both those dudes considering I wasn't born in their 'heyday' and we live in Australia so it's harder to get big acts. Still haven't seen mr diamond though! Must tick that box, mr cool...

  13. you are probably never going to see this comment but i can't resist leaving it...i was at that pearl jam show! i was in college (at csu fullerton) at the time. the band was good but the show experience as a whole was crap! the whole event was really poorly produced (all the concert traffic clogged up the two lane road, not enough parking, couldn't see the stage unless you were way up close of maybe seven feet tall, sound was shit, and tons of random douche bags afoot b/c pj was at their peak popularity). maybe i was spoiled from going to amazing intimate shows at the troubadour or pantages theater or the love fests that were the dead shows, but i would have just as well stayed home for this one (maybe when milla and missa get their time machine going you can go in my place!).
