walkin'

Yesterday we went on a short walk at Crystal Cove State Park. We decided to head out early before Marianne's nap time in hopes of catching her in a more enthusiastic mood. It didn't work. After about 50 steps her "feet hurt and she was tired".

As you know, I have 5 kids. I don't expect that much from a three year old when it comes to walking or hiking but for heaven's sake! Marianne should get some kind of reward for whining! All my usual tactics are useless with her.

I ended up carrying her on my back so we could get a bit further.

As you can see, by my outfit, I know we aren't going to get far. I don't even bother with tennis shoes.

Hahaha! Man I love that picture! Too bad for her, that bad attitude isn't going to stop us from taking more walks!

After we stopped at The Shake Shack for a milkshake she kept saying what a wonderful day it was. At least it's good to know she easily forgets the torture of the trail.

p.s. Thank you so much for the awesome questions for Max and Alex! they are working on them and I'll hopefully have it all ready to post next week.

  1. When a kid looks that cute being grumpy, who wants to bother making her smile?

  2. Marianne is adorable! My goodness. I'm glad you were able to have a lovely hike all the same. A little tip from one of our friends who took their (admittedly 4 and 7 year olds) on a longish hike a few years ago: apparently a piece of chocolate every 1/2 to a 1/4 mile, gives them a boost of energy and uplifts the mood. Where did she learn this tactic? From a book about the World War II when they kept soldiers going on long marches the same way. ;)

    1. We tried chocolate! Once she ate it she started up again. Maybe I need to leave a chocolate trail for her to follow! Hahaha I've also tried distracting her with various questions about animals and birds. Oh well! I'll have to settle with short walks for now :)

  3. Haha, once they decide they've had enough, that's it really isn't it! I inwardly groan when Steve suggests a hike with the kids, I remember too well how their initial enthusiasm doesn't often match the effort they are prepared to put out. And then there'll be three whiners....a dad and two kids....bleurgh!

  4. Lovely pictures. I know how that goes. My almost 4 yr old son loves being outside and will often ask to go on walks and hikes. He'll go about halfway and then insist on being carried or whine the rest of the way.
