Fall Foods

Now that the weather has cooled a bit, I've been using the stove more. I've been making some yummy things that I thought I'd share. Below is cornbread from The Art of Simple Food and Butternut Squash Soup (recipe here).

Next up are two fantastic recipes from My New Roots- Life Changing Crackers and Quick Pickled Radishes. The crackers are amazing! Trust me and just make them. Below is a tasty little combination of the cracker, fresh marinated goat cheese (recipe here), the radishes, salt and pepper and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

Do you own The Moosewood Cookbook? If not, it's worth owning for this recipe alone! Stuffed Squash! This picture isn't the best but don't fooled, it's delicious. I've adapted the recipe a bit and always crave this dish in fall.

Lastly, I give you a simple and incredibly scrumptious Arugala Apple Salad from Aquarian Soul.

What foods say Fall to you? Do you have any mouthwatering recipes you'd like to share?

  1. Dude, I just made cornbread with apple in it and it was my favorite yet (there's apple in everything right now). I'm loving roast roots and squash, with meatloaf (our meat-eating is reaching a happy medium of about once a week and this is the perfect fit because Charlie can have a sandwich the next day), all fall veggie chicken broth soup, and venison broth with miso and fried taters, and that other miso soup I mentioned. I LOVE HARVEST SEASON SO MUCH! Thanks for these recipes. Love you.

    1. okay, so I just dug up our moosewood (so messed up) and had charlie pick up ingredients for the stuffed squash. I've also been meaning to make life changing crackers, so maybe this will be the final push. Thanks again!

    2. I figured you had it :) I substitute a sharp cheddar for The cottage cheese but I'm sure it's delicious either way!

  2. I've been spending so much more time than usual in the kitchen lately, as well - something about the changing season! Those stuffed sqashes just made my stomach grumble with longing. My mom always had Moosewood growing up - it was a kitchen staple! Yum!

  3. I love the moosewood books (I think I have four or five different ones!), though I haven't tried that recipe yet, adding it to my 'to make' list. Also love the art of simple foods, it is one of my favorites, I just got the second volume recently but haven't had a chance to try anything from it yet. I am a cookbook addict!

  4. All of these look so good. I've made those pickled radishes (totally addictive), and although I have a few Moosewood cookbooks, I don't think I've ever tried that recipe. Off to check if it's in any of my books. Fall for me is squash and apple everything (and since we haven't had a kill frost yet, a few tomatoes thrown in for good measure!).

  5. I make my minestrone from Moosewood, made it once already since it's gotten cooler and Lucy likes it this year...A LOT. That makes me feel ridiculously good, she gobbled up two bowls of the leftovers for lunch today. Last year she would only eat the beans and pasta out of it. I want to try these stuffed squash. I have definitely been cooking and baking more since it feels more fallish. Two apple pies so far, and these delicious coconut brownies that i'm making again per request for my friend's baby shower this weekend. Love putting on my apron and bustling about, especially with my trust two year old sidekick and a little rugrat pulling out all the tupperware.

  6. oh thank you for all the links, i am forever on the lookout for meal inspiration. also, your food pics are always so good, these especially...it's a certain type of talent/eye that escapes me. i ate myself sick of the moosewood cookbook back in the 90s, but i remember some gooduns in there, maybe time to pull it out again. oh, and a favorite fall dish...baked miso-tahini tofu with a side of ginger fried yams. been making it since my 20s, but it still feels decadent. xoxo

  8. Soups in general are fall foods for me... particularly this pumpkin ale cheddar soup that my girlfriends adored when I served it last year: http://www.spoonforkbacon.com/2013/10/pumpkin-beer-cheese-soup/
