embracing change

i'm not that great at embracing change when it comes to my appearance. well, unless i suddenly lost 15 lbs. i think i could embrace that! but when it comes to my hair i don't like change. that being said, a couple weeks ago i saw a picture of me from the back and was seriously appalled/grossed out at the length and condition of my hair. i'm well aware of the fact that i totally neglect it and have only gotten it trimmed twice in 4 years but to REALLY SEE IT was a shock. i usually wear it in front of my shoulders but in this particular picture it was all back. after seeing it i suddenly felt like crystal gayle (i actually saw her in concert as a kid and remember loving her hair! hahaha) or one of those scary long haired women pictured here or here. it was one of those moments where i thought, "why didn't someone tell me???" later when i told ruben he said, "um...i think a lot of people have tried to tell you in the nicest way possible". oh. well, i obviously didn't hear them now did i?! anyway, long story short (pun intended) i cut it. this is the shortest it has been in many years and if i'm going to be honest i'm a bit sad. but i know it had to be done. it looks all nice and healthy and all my blonde is gone :(

wait, wasn't the title of this post embracing change? i'll be working on that!

  1. First of all, I LOVE Ruben's comment - so perfect :)

Second, I think you are one of THE ONLY people I know who could really pull off that extreme length. It was not hideous. That said, I think this fresh cut looks amazing. And was probably much needed, as you say. You have such gorgeous hair, it can start to loose appeal on anyone after a certain point because then you just become: the "lady with long hair"

    I love it.

    1. thank you jessica. and since you saw it in real life and not only through selected photos, your opinion means a lot to me! not that other's don't, but i think it typically photographed much better than it looked in person and the last thing i want to hear is, "why did you cut it?":D

  2. Ugh that is soooo me! Problem is, I've never had it cut and I don't have a hairdresser or whatever you call it that I like or actually, thar I can afford! I have never done anything to my hair which includes raking car of it ;) you are inspiring me! I really need a change especially now that it's coming out in handfuls post partum. And gets in the way! I'm glad you're embracing change! I am sure no matter what you do to your hair you look ravishing :)

  3. Oops lots of mistakes, I'm on my iPod. Typing one handed of course, while nursing!

    1. what i failed to mention above is that i was so desperate for a cut but couldn't afford a salon so i had ruben cut it! i know, i am crazy. he did ok, but we had to pay a friend to come fix it :D still way cheaper than the salon though.

and yes, i understand one handed typing. that's why i don't use capital letters.

  4. Are you talking about Cathy's pic of you with nun? I have to admit I thought I would tell you to get a trim just enough so you wouldn't notice so much...but your hair change is fun and very pretty, cant wait to see it!

    1. yes i am talking about that picture! i was horrified. it's shorter than i'd like but oh well.

  5. i agree with mrs. habit...from all the pics of you recently, it did indeed look long, but not gross. (although i know what you mean about those long hair ladies. i always see them in the cow towns up north, and the tails of their horses look identical to their heads). but i do think at some point your hair starts wearing YOU. but aren't cuts such a pain? not to mention expensive. my cut from this summer made me so happy for two months, and now it's grown out again and i'm back to buns and braids. i can't wait to see your shorter style...and don't worry, you'll be back to your glorious bohemian self before you know it.

  6. Anne it looks really good ...but I have definetly been there. It's an actual sick feeling like you lost a favorite bracelet or something! It will grow on you (pun intended hehe)... Mine definetly needs a trim but I won't pay for it, and 2, they always cut more than a trim and I want to cry. Why is that! It's just hair. Anyway congrats on the courage ( to Ruben too haha) from all the pics you have posted on the blog from your youth till now you haven't looked bad yet.. And it had nothing to do with your hair :)

  9. Your haircut looks great! It's still very long so I am sure you will get used to it. I'm in the same boat, I never ever get a hair cut and it's getting to a crazy length. Whenever I decide it needs cutting I just do it myself- and I generally chop off a good four inches each time because I figure I can spare the length. Since I stopped nursing it has been falling out in giant clumps and looks limp and sad. I need a change but I'm not ready!

  10. this is such funny timing because just today i was considering a change for my hair. your hair looks so healthy and beautiful (and still long!). for years i had my husband trim my hair for me, too (my waves are good for hiding mess-ups, haha). i don't know why changes to our hair are so hard (they really are!), but at least it grows back :-)

    1. it's shorter than this picture makes it look. now i'm have a style crisis to go along with hair cutting remorse :/

  11. ahahahha the last picture of "enchanting hair" was hilarious!!! It's really not as bad as you think, but having a really great haircut can really help those transitions...layers to prevent the chop bottom.

Your bangs are looking cute and your hair definitely looks healthier!! :D

  12. I am the total opposite. Growing my hair out has been a challenge, because I'm always craving change. However, LOVE the new 'do. xo

  13. I'm sorry, but I have always been envious of your hair! I LOVE it!

However, I have to agree that a fresh trim always makes me feel so much more chic. You'll look beautiful no matter what!

  14. i can totally relate. long hair sometimes needs a good trim to get rid of the dead stuff, and it can be anxiety-ridden and expensive. i think it is cleansing for our auras, though, and after a couple weeks we begin to feel the energetic lightness. you are beautiful all ways, with any hair.

  15. I get the impression you were really quite appalled at what you saw! the best thing about hair is.......that it grows back. I met you in person hon and I didn't think your hair looked ratty at all. My hair is the pits, I'm trying to grow it, but now that I'm older and it's thinner it needs a heck of a lot more maintenance, and i'm so lazy i don't get it cut often. You're beautiful any way your hair is. x

  16. Very chic hair do, though I also loved your long locks. You don't see too many gals with hair as long as yours was. In any case, it's just hair & I'm sure you can grow it back anytime. In the meantime, enjoy running your fingers through your new do.

  17. your new cut looks good, anne. your hair before looked good as well, but i agree with you, you have to go with how your hair makes you feel... i used to be a person that would cringe at the thought of cutting my hair.... i always kept it very long... fast forward a few years and then, my hair really started graying and i got tired of coloring and embraced my natural haircolor and then, i now experiment with it in different lengths and change it up from time to time... i believe that you will always be beautiful whichever way you choose for your hair to be.. :)

  18. Your new look is so sweet! But I do have to admit that your "crazy " long hair is totally one of my big hair inspirations (and Sadie and Heather too). If mine wasn't so curly it'd look a lot longer, which is why, inspired by you I even bought a hair straightener this year. Nevermind that I'm too lazy to use it and even when I do the frizz undoes in a minute ;) So here's looking at you kid "Diiiid you ever know that you're my hair-o..."

    1. wait a sec, i thought you wrote once that you didn't like super long hair? maybe i misread that? well, considering my length i am no longer a hair inspiration for you or anyone that likes long hair :( waaaaaa!!!!

  19. Anne, your hair looks super cute and I have proof: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23821209@N06/8162419216/in/photostream. See! I say embrace that 60's Katherine Ross look you were into. It's perfect for that: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm4247749888/nm0001684. Oh, and you should definitely try this: http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1721276416/nm0001684. :)

Also, if your hair grows anything like mine, it'll be back to crazy long before you know it, so just try to have fun with something a little different for now. AND in my experience it takes a few weeks or so following a new cut for the ends to kind of start thinning out a bit taking away some of that bluntness. When this starts to happen it will look and feel less haircut-y, if that makes any sense?

You're gorgeous Anne, and I had fun spending time with you over the weekend :)

  20. ok, well i guess i will go with the katherine ross look :D little did i know, when i posted about the graduate, that my hair would ended up looking more like hers than intended. and i hope it does grow fast like yours.

it was great hanging out with you too! i'm off to post about it right now :D
